What is your digital liturgy?

I’ve just finished a book by Samuel James called, “Digital Liturgies”. It is all about how the habitat of internet technology undermines Christian wisdom. The book description says it well, “This accessible book exposes 5 ‘digital liturgies’ that prohibit people from contemplating big truths, accepting the uncomfortable, and acknowledging God as their Creator. It then calls readers to live faithfully before Christ, finding wisdom through Scripture and rest in God's perfect design.” It really is a great read.

One particular part stood out to me that I thought I would share… it deals with the minutia of the day and our feeling of wanting to avoid the ordinary. Here was an illustration for us:

“It’s easy to vilify minutiae, especially in our youth. Several years ago I read a fable about a young man who was bored with the tedious details of his life. He spent each day dreaming about what he would do tomorrow. He wanted to experience life’s ‘highs’ and felt that the burdensome minutes of school and chores were getting in the way. One day a mysterious stranger offered him a magical ball of yarn. If he only pulled on the yarn, the young man could make time move faster. During a particularly boring stretch of school, the young man pulled on the yarn and was instantly transported to the end of the school day. This experience proved addictive, and soon the young man was pulling more and more thread so he could ‘skip ahead’ to the best parts of his life. He eventually ran out of yarn, and, as an old man who had few memories because of all he had skipped, he lamented his decision to miss out on the ordinary joys of life.”

It leaves me to think about how I see my days, how will I interact with the tedious details that happen day in and day out. How about you?

It’s a book I would commend to each of you and hope that it helps you in navigating the use of our digital devices that have seemed to overwhelm our world.
