The Invocation of Invitation

How many times has an invitation failed to reach you? Whether it is a birthday celebration, a dinner, a Superbowl party or any number of meaningful or mundane events that we collectively plan, there have been numerous times when I have been left out. Times when others got an invitation but mine never showed up. Can you relate? It’s disappointing and can be discouraging.

Invitations are meaningful when we get them. The thought that we were considered in someone’s invitation always says something. It invokes in us the knowledge that we were thought of and wanted.

This is why we regularly include an “Invitation” when we gather to worship. It serves as a reminder that you are not only considered, but you matter.
Take a look at our invitation:

To all who are weary and need rest,
To all who feel like outcasts and alone (whether single or married, too young or too old),
To all who mourn and long for comfort,
To all who feel worthless and wonder if God cares,
To all who fail and desire strength,
To all who sin and need a Savior,
Summit Ridge Church opens wide her doors with a welcome from Jesus Christ,
The Ally of his enemies
The Defender of the guilty,
The Justifier of the inexcusable,
The Friend of sinners.
Welcome.

Each word is purposeful – intended to draw us in. It captures the place where many of us often are as we gather for services. It is a reminder that each of us are needy and needed – Needy of our savior and needed by one another. Ultimately, it invites us to submit to Jesus, beckoning our hearts to remember He alone can meet our deepest need.
I love this Invitation. It has been a beautiful reminder for me. And I hope it will be an encouragement to you as we read it in our services.
We GET to worship together tomorrow, and I look forward to gathering with you, church. It goes without saying but in case you need to hear it… you are invited.
